It’s 8:12pm.

She’s brought it up again. Third time this term. ‘Can I please just change schools.’

Every time you’ve asked why she’s said ‘I don’t know, I just hate it

You want a reason. She doesn’t have one. Or she does and she can’t say it

Before you decide understand what she’s actually asking

‘I want to move schools’ is teenage code. Sometimes it means the school. Often it means something else.

Common translations…

‘There’s someone here I can’t get away from.’

‘I’ve become someone here I don’t want to be.’

‘My friend group changed and I have no language for that loss.’

‘Something happened last term that I haven’t told you.’

The problem is almost never the building.

Tonight, don’t say yes and don’t say no.

Sit next to her. Say this..

You’ve asked to move schools three times. I’m not going to say no. I’m not going to say yes. I’m going to ask you a different question first.’

‘If you woke up tomorrow at a new school, what would be different about your life. Not just school. Your life.’

Then listen carefully. What she says next is the actual answer.

If she names a specific person or thing, that’s the real reason. If she says ‘I don’t know, I’d just be different,’ she wants to escape a version of herself.

Tomorrow, three moves

One.. Follow up on whatever she named. If a name came up, a specific incident, or ‘I can’t tell you’ lean into it. Not to interrogate. To let her know you heard

Two.. Meet with the school counsellor of year advisor before you decide. They see her in a context you don’t.

Three… If the answer is still yes, take it seriously. Sometimes teens need geographic distance from a version of themselves that got locked in socially

But don’t decide fast… and don’t decide to avoid the harder conversation.

Her wanting to move is information. Not the whole answer. Just information. Your job is to figure out what she’s really asking for before you decide.
